Australia is not a hugely expensive destination, once you get there. But it is far away from pretty much everywhere in the Northern Hemisphere, and you’ll probably find the airfare to be your largest single expense. That said, Australia’s exchange rate is a bonus for American and British visitors — although fluctuations mean you can never be sure just how much of a bonus it’ll be.
